A witnessed deposit starts a Chainflip swap, but it does not mean the destination asset is already in your wallet. Validators first agree that the source-chain payment is real; the protocol then prices and records the trade before sending the output on its own chain. What does it mean for Chainflip to witness a deposit?

Witnessing means validators have observed a deposit and recorded it on Chainflip’s State Chain, the network’s accounting and coordination layer. For a regular deposit, a broker or app first opens a deposit channel: a record that connects a unique source-chain address with the requested asset, destination address and swap settings. The user sends funds to that address.

Validators watch supported chains for deposits. They wait for the protocol’s required confirmation threshold, which varies by chain, then submit witness records. What happens after the deposit is witnessed?

Once the State Chain registers the deposit, the swap is ready for pricing in Chainflip’s Just-In-Time market, a system where liquidity providers can update offers for each trade. This is the point where the requested trade can meet its limits. A minimum accepted price can prevent execution below a set rate. Some swaps also support a limit on deviation from an oracle price, a reference price from an external data feed.
